Chennai: Police on Sunday rescued a 14-year-old girl, a minor, who was kidnapped two weeks ago by two youths, who had her confined in a house in Thirumullaivoyal.

Police tracked the whereabouts of the accused, Karthikeyan, 20 and Dinesh Babu, 26 using their mobile tower location and held them. Karthikeyan worked as a welder and Dinesh Babu was employed with a private firm in Ambattur estate.

During questioning, Karthikeyan confessed he became fond of the girl and had kidnapped her and kept in a house to marry her after she turns 18 years, police said.

He had met the girl a few months ago at Marina beach and later visited her often at a shop in Aminjikarai, where the girl works as a sales girl.

The minor girl’s mother was mentally ill and she stayed with her grandmother, Saraswathi in VM Street in Aminjikarai, police said.

On December 1, Karthikeyan, along with his friend Dinesh Babu kidnapped the girl from a church near Koyambedu.

Her grandmother Saraswathy who accompanied her left a complaint with the CMBT police two days later after searches in the nearby areas turned futile.

Initial investigations confirmed that the girl was kidnapped by the duo as they had made her speak with her grandmother using Karthikeyan’s mobile phone.

After initial hiccups, police finally traced the location and rescued the girl and handed her over to her grandmother.

“Though the girl didn’t complain of any harassment, we have requested the magistrate to order a medical check up for the minor girl, to see if the perpetrators had abused her,” CMBT Inspector Sam Vincent said.

The trio along with another accused stopped the victim, C. Surendra, on Thursday midnight at Motinagar crossroads when he was returning home on his bike.

Police form three teams to crack Siddapura murder

Bangalore: A day after 62-year-old Pushpa Natarajan was found viciously murdered in the living room of her rented house in Siddapura, the police claim that three teams have now been formed to track down the killer.

A senior officer, on condition on anonymity said, “The victim was found lying in a pool of blood with her throat slashed.

It appears that the killer was not a stranger, and there is a vengeful motive behind the murder. At this stage, it is difficult to make concrete statements, but the case is being probed from all angles.”

Unconfirmed reports suggest that the killer knew that Pushpa had undergone a thyroid operation recently, which would have prevented her from screaming; hence her throat was slashed.

Pushpa’s daughter-in-law Geethalakshmi and her four-year-old son were asleep in the next room when the murder is thought to have occurred, between 3-4.30 pm on Saturday.

Deputy Commissioner of police (South) H.S. Revanna said, “The victim’s family members are still in shock. We have not been able to interrogate them thoroughly yet, but we strongly suspect that the murderer was known to the family.”

Meanwhile, the police have found a steel tumbler and plate kept on the table in the hall where Pushpa was murdered.

The victim and her husband, were living with their son, Senthil Kumar, his wife and their four-year-old son on Byrasandra main road for the past six years.

Natarajan and Senthil are the proprietors of a tyre business, the police said.

Pushpa’s husband and her son were not at home when the incident occurred. The murder came to light at 4.30 pm when the domestic maid, walked in, and found the main door ajar and saw Pushpa’s body.

Fire in house where couple committed suicide

Chennai: Efforts by relatives to get rid of the bad smell emanating from the house of Shanmugham–Latha couple in Nanganallur, who committed suicide by consuming poison, took a dangerous twist with all the furniture, including the cot, table and chair going up in flames when they burnt incense sticks and spread sambrani smoke in the room on Saturday night.

The couple was found dead in the bedroom of their residence at Lakshmi Nagar, Nanganallur on Saturday evening.

They had consumed poison, because of heavy debt, and died at least three days back.

The house, which was on rent, was filled with bad smell from the decomposed body. Their three sons were studying by staying in hostels outside Chennai.

It was one of their sons who discovered the bodies when he came home from hostel on Saturday.

The police on Sunday said the relatives took the three sons of the deceased couple to their homes on Saturday evening after the funeral.

The relatives had lit a lot of agarbathis and used sambrani in the room where the two were found dead to get rid of the bad odour.

“It looks like they kept the fan on. It is possible that the burning agarbathi fell on a piece of cloth, leading to the fire,” the police said.

On Sunday, when Shanmugham’s brother came the house to clean up the place, he found heavy smoke emanating from the room. Fire tenders were immediately called to douse the flames. All the furniture and clothes in the room were gutted by then, said the police.
