A day after, Mysore limps back to normalcy

Mysore: A day after the mortal remains of the scion of the Mysore royal family, Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar were consigned to flames with state honours, Mysore city began to limp back to normalcy.

As the Amba Vilas Palace, popularly known as Mysore Palace, remained shut for the second consecutive day at the request of Wadiyar's wife, Pramoda Devi, the sprawling palace grounds wore a deserted look and the seven elephants used for giving joy rides to tourists, stayed chained in the courtyard.

Members of the royal family meanwhile performed several in-house rituals.

While the Haalu-Thuppa (milk-ghee) ritual was performed at the palace Kalyana Mantap by Pramoda Devi and Wadiyar's four sisters, the final ceremony to mark his death will be held on December 21 and 22.

Mysoreans too performed poojas and erected huge hoardings in his honour.

In some areas, people held special programmes and played songs in praise of the contributions of the Mysore royal family to the city.

Muslims, who have held the Wadiyars in great esteem as as they were the first to recommend reservation for backward classes, too mourned his death in mosques.
