Mysore Raja laid to rest

Mysore: Mysore paid tribute to its last prince as he made his final journey on Wednesday through the royal seat of the kingdom over which the Wadiyars held sway for 600 years.

More than a 150,000 people thronged the route to Manuvana, the cremation grounds of the erstwhile rulers, in the knowledge that Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar was the last of an unbroken line of rulers who traced their ancestry back to the Yadu kings of yore, once ruled by Lord Krishna.

Wadiyar, who died in Bengaluru on Tuesday after a massive cardiac arrest, was consigned to the flames with full state honours and a gun salute at 5.27 pm by his elder sister Gayatri Devi's son Chaduranga Kantharaja Urs, his possible heir. All shops and businesses downed shutters voluntarily as the city came to a standstill.

In attendance were Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, former chief ministers H.D. Kumaraswamy and B.S. Yeddyurappa and a battery of cabinet ministers and legislators.
