Rishi backs move for numbering bus routes

State Transport Commissioner demands the introduction of number system for bus routes in Kochi.
Kochi: Rishi Raj Singh, the state Transport Commissioner, seconded the demand to introduce number system for bus routes in Kochi in the backdrop of the increasing number of migrants in the city.

The commissioner also supported the DC report echoing the request of the migrants including techies, navy personnel and migrant labourers. Singh said he would ask the Ernakulam Regional Transport Officer about the proposal to invite the opinions of stakeholders in the road transport meeting.

“ The issue has to be discussed thoroughly in the RTA meeting. Ernakulam RTO can take an appropriate decision based on the practicability of the proposal,” he said.

The migrant community in the city has been suffering as the buses display destination boards only in Malayalam. Perumbavoor has been the only exception in the district where they display boards in Hindi too in favour of the huge number of migrant labourers around that area.

DC’s report ‘Give numbers to bus routes’ had talked about the need to introduce numbers for bus routes in tune with metros like New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Bengaluru.

K.J. Sohan, the chairperson of town planning standing committee of Cochin Corporation, had also urged the need for being hospitable to the migrants by displaying destination boards in three languages. He had also presented a resolution in the corporation council in this regard.
