Tejdeep Kaur Menon in trouble

HC pulls up cops for not filing chargesheet in 11 years.

Hyderabad: In a major setback to senior IPS officer Tejdeep Kaur Menon, the Andhra Pradesh High Court on Friday directed the director-general of police and the Hyderabad city police commissioner to take steps to file a chargesheet within a week in a case registered against her and five others at the Begumpet police station in 2003.

While allowing a petition by G. Haritha, a housewife, seeking directions to the police authorities to file a chargesheet in the case forthwith, Justice A. Ramalingeswara Rao found fault with the police for not filing a chargesheet for 11 years in the case.

The petitioner submitted that in 2002, Tejdeep Kaur, with a view to help a friend, had barged into her house along with others and insulted, abused and beat her. She had lodged a complaint against the IPS officer and five others at the Begumpet police station.

Haritha alleged that local police officers were putting pressure on her to get the case withdrawn against Tejdeep Kaur.

The judge said that though the investigation had been completed long back, the filing of the chargesheet was held up on untenable grounds merely because of the involvement of public servants.

The judge observed that the citizen should not have the feeling that it was difficult to proceed against public servants even if they exceeded or misused their powers.

He said, “When the law treats every one as equal, the law enforcement agencies should not treat some as exceptional”.
