Cops get rap for bashing suspects

Hyderabad: State police chief B. Prasada Rao on Monday ordered disciplinary action against a DSP and two other police officers in Anantapur district, who beat up four murder suspects in public view.

The DGP directed Anantapur range DIG B. Balakrishna to initiate disciplinary action against deputy superintendent of police P. Supraja, inspector Sreenivasulu and sub-inspector Ismail. “Their action is condemnable,” Prasada Rao told the media.

He said the DIG would conduct an inquiry and submit a report following which action will be taken against the officers. The DSP was later transferred. Rayalaseema IG Rajiv Ratan said that she would be posted with the Greyhounds.

The video footage of the incident, which took place on Saturday in Guntakal, was broadcast by news channels. The footage showed a police team led by Supraja beating up four murder suspects. Police had picked up one Sekhar for allegedly murdering his father-in-law Mallaiah, 65, along with his accomplices Somu, Peddanna.

Hyderabad: A DSP and two other police officers of Anantapur district took four murder suspects to the place of the crime and ‘punished’ them in public, reportedly to ‘set an example.’

The TV footage showed the four men kneeling and the police officers hitting them with sticks. A policeman was also seen slapping the four.

The footage also showed the cops asking the wife of the accused Sekhar, who allegedly murdered his father-in-law Mallaiah, 65, to slap them.
