Samurai warriors to be IFFK attraction

A film each of Kon Ichikawa, Kenji Misumi & Daisuke Ito to be part of package.

Three of the most stylised narrators of 'bushido' or samurai warrior's way of life after Akira Kurosawa will be featured at the Samurai section of the 18th edition of the IFFK beginning here on December 6.

A film each of Kon Ichikawa, Kenji Misumi and Daisuke Ito will be part of the seven film package. They represent the finest tradi tions of Samurai films, considered the forerunners of Hollywood westerns. All of them were contemporaries of Kurosawa.

A samurai film includes samurai warriors, sword fighting, and historical setting and these warriors are bound by a code of honour called ‘bushido’.

Kon Ichikawa’s 'Actor’s Revenge', which is also known as the 'Revenge of a Kabuki Actor', stars the legendary Kazuo Hasegawa, said to be as popular a samurai actor as the great Toshiro Mifune. The film, made in Eastman colour, was considered to be technically accomplished and made Ichikawa a name to be reckoned with in Hollywood.

Kenji Misumi is the initiator of the legendary Zatoichi series. Zatoichi is a fictional character, a blind masseur and sword-master, who lived in the 19th century. It was created by novelist Kan Shimozawa. 'Fight Zatoichi Fight', the third Zatoichoi film made by Misumi will be screened at the festival.

The Zatoichi series was so popular that the great Takeshi Kitano had made a film Zatoichi which won the best director prize at the Venice film festival in 2003.

Daisuke Ito is the seniormost member of the four Samurai legends, including Kurosawa. IFFK will showcase his penultimate film, 'Scar Yosobaro'. It is widely felt that the international accolades for Kurosawa’s Rashomon had put Ito’s masterpiece in shadows.

All the three films feature physically and psychologically-scarred warriors.
