SCB crashes wedding party

Function hall razed; Owner plans to seek Rs 5cr in damages.

Hyderabad: The demolition drive of the Secunderabad Cantonment authorities against illegal constructions displaced a marriage party recently.

The family ran from one function hall to another after Tirumala Garden, booked by them, for the marriage was demolished.

D. Prabhakar, father of the bride said, “I briefly lost consciousness (when told about the impending demolition). All the wedding invitations had been already distributed,” said D. Prabhakar.

The SCB authorities demolished Tirumala Marriage, Function and Dining hall besides other structures in Bungalow No. 186 on Friday.

“Only five more days were left for the wedding and we were all shocked. We cannot explain the trauma we underwent,” said D. Suguna, mother of the bride, D. Rajeshwari.

Thankfully, a friend of Prabhakar informed him that another function hall on BowenpallyMedchal road was available as a wedding booked for November 28 was postponed. The family wasted no time in booking the hall and informed the invitees accordingly.

Meanwhile, Narayan K. Swamy, owner of Tirumala Garden Function Hall, said, “The Cantonment authorities have got it all wrong. This is not a B-3 category land.

It’s B-2 category land. We are genuine owners and have all the documents. We are going to file a case against the Cantonment Board seeking compensation of Rs 5 crore towards damages,” he said.

When contacted, SCB chief executive officer Sujatha Gupta said they would continue to demolish illegal constructions. “The nature of old grant bungalows cannot be changed. These bungalows should be used for residential purposes only.”
