Aarushi-Hemraj murder: CBI seeks death penalty for Talwars

Agency calls the murder of Aarushi and Hemraj a rarest of rare case; order expected at 4.30 PM.

Ghaziabad: CBI on Tuesday pressed for maximum punishment of death for dentist couple Rajesh and Nupur Talwar, a day after they were convicted of killing their daughter Aarushi and domestic help Hemraj five-and-a-half years ago.

Arguing before Additional Session Judge Shyam Lal on quantum of punishment for Talwars, CBI counsel R.K. Saini submitted that the killing was a cold-blooded murder and fell in the 'rarest of rare' category, defence counsel Satyaketu Singh told reporters. Saini pleaded for maximum punishment for the Talwar couple.

Defence counsel Tanvir Mir countered CBI's argument and said the evidence against his clients were weak and sought leniency for Talwars, Singh said. The court is expected to pronounce its verdict at 4.30 PM.

Rajesh and Nupur Talwar were on Monday convicted in the sensational double murder of their 14-year-old daughter Aarushi and Hemraj by the court.

The arguments in the case, whose probe by local police and then by the CBI saw many dramatic turns and flip flops by the prosecution, were concluded Monday afternoon.

After a 15-month trial, Judge Shyam Lal held the Talwar couple guilty of destruction of evidence in the murder on the intervening night of May 15 and 16, 2008, days before the birthday of the class nine student in their residence in Noida. The father was also convicted under section 203 of IPC for filing wrong information with the Noida police station about the incident.
