AP: Imam rapes 12-year-old, tries to intimidate girl

Warangal: A 12-year-old girl, the daughter of a labourer, was sexually assaulted by Mohd Sarvar Baig, 60, an Imam (priest) of Ajmer Jama Masjid at Fort Warangal.

The incident took place in a deserted house near Ajmer Jama Masjid on Muharram, November 15, but came to light on Sunday when members of a local Self-Help Group (SHG) took the girl to the Mills Colony police station to lodge a complaint.

The Imam has been leading devotees in prayer for the last decade, said sources. Though the child informed her parents, they wanted to hush it up, fearing the wrath of community elders.

Since she got no help from her parents, eyewitnesses said that the victim visited houses of nearby residents seeking justice. Distressed by her plight, locals forced community elders to convene a panchayat. The panchayat decided to keep the case under wraps. However, a case was filed against the imam.

This was fiercely resisted by five women SHG members. “They (the five women SHG members) did not agree with the panchayat’s verdict and instead took the victim to Mills Colony police station,” a local resident told this newspaper.

The urban police have registered a case under stringent provisions of the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, 2013 against the accused.

Speaking to this newspaper, Warangal Urban SP A. Venkateshwar Rao said that the accused was now in their custody.

“We have already sent the victim for medical examination to MGM hospital,” he said, adding that they have gone ahead with the registration of the case against the accused in spite of the reluctance of the victim’s parents.

Harassment at work cause for murder

Chennai: Victims of harassment at the workplace seem to be resorting to quick-fix solutions. The murder of a textile shop owner on Saturday was allegedly committed after one of his female staff members complained at home about his misbehaviour. Her brother and his friends stormed into the shop on Saturday to deliver 'justice'.

The Royapuram police have detained the girl, Meena, 22, who had reported the matter to the police first; her brother, Satheesh, 19, both Tondiarpet residents, and two of his friends, Vignesh and Sivakumar.

On Saturday morning, the deceased, Eshwar, a resident of Pantheon road in Egmore, was found lying in a pool of blood at his shop, Sona Mandir, on M.S. Koil street in Royapuram, by a staff member around 9.30 am.

Eshwar was rushed to Stanley medical hospital and was later referred to a private multi- speciality hospital on Greams road, where he died around 12.30 pm.

Police investigations on Sunday revealed that Eshwar had verbally abused Meena and a few other staff members over the last two days after his mobile phone went missing.

This is suspected to have irked the girl, who plotted with her brother, Satheesh, to kill him. He and two of his friends, Vignesh and Sivakumar, entered the shop around 8.30 am on Saturday, and smashed his head with a sledgehammer.

They had left him to die while Meena, who was also present with them, alerted the neighbours and approached the police, acting as if she had nothing to do with the incident, a senior police officer said. Further investigations are on.

42 Lankans smuggle 10 kg gold, held at Kochi airport

Kochi: The Air Intelligence Unit of the Cochin International Airport on Sunday intercepted and seized crude gold ornaments weighing more than 10 kg from a team of 42 Sri Lankan nationals.

The ornaments have been valued at more than Rs 3 cr. The team was held based on a tip-off that international rackets were now using foreign nationals to smuggle gold to India against the backdrop of the recent arrests of natives.

The Sri Lankan team, consisting of 28 women and 14 men, arrived by Sri Lankan flight UL 165 at 8.45 a.m. from Colombo. “The crude ornaments were concealed on their body.

On verifying their passports, it was found that most of them had made several trips from Colombo to various southern airports in India and had gone back to Colombo the same day or the very next day.

It is believed that a major gang is operating in Colombo and Chennai and is recruiting passengers to smuggle in the precious metal.

These passengers are only carriers who are given remuneration and free travel tickets. They also carry back textiles and other goods that can be sold at a huge profit in Sri Lanka,” said S.A.S.Navaz, Deputy Commissioner of Cochin Customs.

As per baggage rules, only Indian nationals are permitted to bring in gold ornaments. Male passengers can bring in duty free gold ornaments worth Rs 50,000 and female passengers can bring the same worth Rs 1 lakh.

Any Indian who has stayed abroad for more than six months can import gold bullion or gold ornaments totally weighing only one kg by paying duty at 10 per cent and 15 per cent respectively in convertible foreign exchange. Foreigners are not permitted to import gold or gold ornaments and cannot pay duty for the same.

Customs sleuths are now questioning the Sri Lankan natives to collect details about the racket which employed them. A Chennai-based gang is believed to be under the customs radar.
