Chennai police commissioner’s office retrieves stolen property worth Rs7.15 crore.
Chennai: In a major haul, the city police commissioner’s office retrieved stolen property worth Rs7.15 crore and returned them to their owners at the commissionerate in Vepery on Thursday.
The retrieved property, which comprised around 931 sovereigns of gold and diamond jewellery, three kilograms of silver, according to an official release, also included a container truck with a consignment of 600 laptops and 950 computer monitors that were looted from the Chennai harbour two months ago. In all, Rs 42.5 lakh, four cars, five two wheelers and other valuables were all part of a display kept at the commissioner’s office.
According to police sources, 214 offenders have been arrested so far in connection with close to two hundred cases being registered. The owners were settled an amount initially and would be given the whole amount at the respective police stations, an officer said.
At least 35 serial offenders involved in 63 cases of chain snatching in various parts of the city were arrested during this ten­ure, a release said. A Kar­nataka native, Baalchand and a Mahara­sht­rian, Shivlal, were among the persons arrested for house burglaries in the city, the release added.
