43-yr-old treated for rare cardiac ailment

Bangalore: Little did this 43-year-old woman know that she was suffering from a rare cardiac ailment. Snigdha Das, a resident of West Bengal, used to get frequent chest pain, palpitations and breathlessness for which she had approached several hospitals in Kolkata and some in Bangalore too.

A month ago she approached Sagar Hospitals, located at DSI – Kumaraswamy Layout. The 2D Echo cardiogram showed an unusually enlarged right chamber of the heart. A coronary angiogram revealed a large vascular swelling which was about 10x9cms with the feeding artery arising from the coronary artery.

A swelling of this dimension is first to be recorded in medical history, claimed Dr K.S. Kishore, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at Sagar Hospitals, who had diagnosed Snigdha’s problem.

He said, “Snigdha had come to our hospital with complaints of chest pain, palpitations and breathlessness. After a thorough examination, we conducted a CT-Angiogram of the heart, which showed a large vascular swelling, a ball like structure attached to the surface of the heart and communicating with one of the chambers on the right side. This was compressing the right part of his heart making her breathing difficult.”

In such a case we had two options, either to block the feeder artery or remove the growth with surgery. Since the swelling was huge, the option of blocking the feeder artery had to be dropped. Hence surgery had to be conducted, he added.

“On November 6, Snigdha was successfully operated and the valves were reconstructed. The surgery had taken almost about three and half hours,” Dr Kishore said.

Post surgery Snigdha has recovered very well and was discharged from the hospital on Thursday. Snigdha said, “My chest pain and breathlessness are fine now and I am very happy that my treatment was successful.”
