Egmore art gallery to a get face-lift

The facade of the national art gallery would totally be dismantled and re-erected.

Chennai: The facade of the national art gallery would totally be dismantled and re-erected. This was one of the many conservation works decided by the committee constituted for the preservation of the endearing edifice on Egmore museum campus.

The committee has identified various conservation works for the gallery. The steps include documenting the frontal portion including the facade of the building on either side through videography or still photographs, removal of existing vegetation and numbering of flight steps.

The committee also identified excavation of trenches less than 2 metres long on the northern side of the building’s exterior, besides total dismantling and re-erection of the frontal portion of the building.

The committee was constituted after a government order was passed following a '11 crore grant for the preservation of the structure. The chief minister had announ­ced the grant in the Assembly.
