Congress MP may fight Rahul Gandhi in Amethi

Dr Sanjay Singh, Congress MP from Sultanpur, is apparently veering towards the BJP.

Lucknow: Dr Sanjay Singh, Congress MP from Sultanpur, is apparently veering towards the BJP. According to sources, Dr Singh, who represents the Sultanpur that lies adjacent to Amethi, may now contest the Amethi seat against Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on a BJP ticket.

The Congress MP, who is the erstwhile Raja of Amethi (Mr Gandhi’s constituency), held his birthday celebrations in Amethi on Tuesday and, more than the absence of Congress leaders, it was the presence of BJP leaders at the function that set rumour mills spinning.

The fact that Dr Singh chose to hold his birthday function in Amethi, and not in Sultanpur, added fuel to the fire. His wife, Ameeta Singh, a former Congress MLA from Amethi, was also present at the function and underlined the need for change in Amethi.

In their speeches, his supporters spoke about lack of development and growing unemployment in Amethi and pleaded with Dr Singh to take charge of the constituency.
Dr Singh, on his part, refused to clear the air about his political plans, saying, “I have not quit politics. Everything will be clear once the list of candidates for the Lok Sabha polls is released by political parties.”
