Hyderabad woman stuck in Britain

Jamaican husband accused of torturing her.

Hyderabad: The evil practice of selling daughters for money has resulted in nothing but tragedy for Nasreen Fatima. She was married off to a Jamaican national and lives in the UK, but last month lodged a domestic violence complaint with the United Kingdom police against her husband.

Nasreen was bought by Abdul Rahman Gordon who is double her age, for Rs 10,000. They were married in 2006. The 27-year-old lived in Hyderabad for two years with her two daughters. She left for the UK in 2009. In her complaint she said she was physically and sexually abused, locked up, beaten and starved.

Her family in Hyderabad is knocking on every possible door to get her back.
Speaking to this newspaper from the UK, Nasreen said that her father had to undergo heart surgery and there was no money for it.

“Abdul Rahman Gordon, who was introduced to us by our family friends, offered to take care of the medical expenses and in turn asked to marry me. My parents had no choice and got me married to him. He was 21 years older than me and a father of three children. For two years I lived in Hyderabad with my daughters Ameena, 6, and Aishabee (five-years old and physically challenged),” she said.

“We lived a normal life and were blessed with Aiyan and Anisha, my third daughter. After their birth, he started ill-treating me. He kept us locked up the whole day at times and never returned home for days. I was beaten black and blue. My left eye is badly hurt, my body used to be filled with blood shots (sic). My children were starved for days.

“When I questioned him about his whereabouts he stuffed a cloth in my mouth. I found out that he was living with his first wife. On Id, he returned home and turned a monster. He hit me on my back with a rod.

He threatened to murder me and my children and bury them in the backyard and inform my parents that I had run away with another man. I am managing the house with £58 the government gives me towards the medical care of my second daughter Aishabee,” she said.

She lodged a police complaint on October 15. The UK police has given the couple one year’s time (till October 15, 2014) to work out a compromise.

Nasreen’s father, Hameed Mohinuddin Quraishi Afzal said that Gordon has all the legal documents like passports and is demanding a huge amount to send Nasreen and the children to Hyderabad.
“We are unable to meet his demands. I have asked my daughter to seek help from the police and the Indian Embassy.”
