BJP MP from Gujarat arrested for RTI activist's murder

New Delhi: The CBI on Tuesday arrested BJP’s Lok Sabha MP from Junagadh (Gujarat), Dinu Bogha Solanki, in connection with its probe into the sensational killing of  RTI activist Amit Jethwa in Ahmedabad in 2010.

According to sources Solanki, considered close to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi,  has been arrested for his alleged role in the conspiracy that led to the murder of Jethwa.

The CBI sleuths arrested Solanki during questioning. “The CBI officials decided to arrest him when he failed to satisfactorily reply to the questions put before him. Solanki arrived at the CBI headquarters this morning and was questioned for about seven hours. He was giving conflicting versions during questioning and remained un-cooperative", a source said.

The Lok Sabha MP was also confronted with the statements given by other arrested accused in the case during questioning on Tuesday.

During the questioning, Solanki is understood to have denied all the allegations against him including his alleged role in  the killing of Jethwa, who had filed a large number of RTI applications and a PIL against  illegal mining in Gir forest region.

Solanki is likely to be produced before a designated court here on Wednesday. Another sources said, “Probe by the agency has revealed that Jethwa was apprehending a threat to his life from Solanki and had also written to the then state Chief minister Narendra Modi about it.

On June 28th, 2010, Jethwa had filed a PIL in the Gujarat High  Court in connection with illegal mining in Gir forests in Junagadh district which is a  protected area”.

The agency sleuths during probe found that on July 6, 2010, Jethwa had  impleaded Solanki and his two nephews, Pratap and Shiva, as respondents.

“And 14 days later, Jethwa was killed before the Gujarat High Court on July 20, 2010”, the source added.

Talking to this newspaper, CBI spokesperson Kanchan Prasad informed, “The Lok Sabha MP from Junagadh has been taken into custody in the case of murder of RTI activist Amit  Jethwa. He will be produced before a designated court here on Wednesday. After taking transit remand from the designated court, the Lok Sabha MP will be taken to Ahmedabad for further probe”.

Earlier, the BJP MP had been given a clean chit by Crime Branch of Gujarat Police.
