Chennai: Five persons were injured in a fire at an aromatics factory inside the Sipcot industrial area at Siruseri on Tuesday. The fire which broke out at golden jubilee biotech park for women society inside Sipcot destroyed the whole plant, said a fire officer.
Saravanan, 37, and Bhaskar, 53, were reportedly injured in the incident and are being treated at a hospital in Porur, while three others, Iyappa, Selvam and Silambarasan, were given first-aid at a hospital in Kelambakkam.
Welding works happening inside the plant around 12.30 pm had led to a spark which came in contact with oil drums kept inside, leading to the fire, according to a fire official. Fire tenders from Tiruvanmiyur, Siruseri and Tambaram areas, which were fighting a fire at a chemical factory near Sholingan-allur, were immediately pressed into action at Siruseri.
Earlier, fire broke out at a chemical factory near Sholinganallur on Tuesday, reportedly leading to damage of goods worth a few crores of rupees. According to sources, around 11 am, a fire broke out during a repair operations in one of the boilers on the premises of Prasad Organics Private Limited, located at Kumaran nagar in Chemmenchery, off Old Mahabalipuram road.
Initially, the workers had tried to put off the flames using extinguishers, but it turned futile as the fire spread quickly due to the presence of chemicals and gases. Fire and rescue service personnel were alerted immediately and three fire tenders from Tambaram, Siruseri and Tiruvanmiyur areas swung into action and the flames were put off in less than an hour.
The owner of the factory had claimed that property worth Rs 4 crore was destroyed in the fire. The Sholinganallur police have registered a case and are investigating the cause of the fire.
