Visakhapatnam: Vizag is fast emerging as the state’s cyber crime capital with the increasing cases of youngsters making obscene calls to their girlfriends, or, sending them similar messages amounting to sexual harassment through emails or short message services.
Mostly, such obscene messages are sent to women or girls during odd hours. Majority of the men commit cyber crimes under the influence of alcohol but in case of the youth they are mostly propelled both by alcoholism and their addiction to the Internet.
Incidentally, that happens to be the latest observation of the Cyber Crimes Investigation Cell. In fact, recently, the CCIC cops booked more than 10 persons for sending obscene SMSes and emails to either unknown women or girlfriends, or, making abusive calls to them during odd hours.
Inspector, CCIC, B.V. Venkateswara Rao told this newspaper that as many as 153 cases were registered against those committing cyber crimes under the IT Act in Vizag in 2012 itself. Most (50%) of such cases were related to sending abusive SMSes and emails only.
Incidentally, during interrogation, the majority of the arrested men admitted to being aware of the cyber laws. They admitted that they committed cyber offences under the influence of alcohol.
According to the CCIC cops, those who indulge in cyber crimes are aware of the stringent cyber laws but feel tempted to commit them once they wash down a few swigs of whiskey.
“In majority of cases, youngsters first develop friendship with girls or women and then start sending messages through emails and SMSes”, Rao said.
