Kochi: The new Shipyard Ambedkar Marg connecting Panampilly Avenue and Thevara, planned by the Greater Cochin Development Authority as part of its Vision 2030 programme, will be open to traffic on April 6.
The new 300-meter long road, built at a cost of Rs 23 lakh, will help ease traffic on the south railway overbridge and MG Road as commuters on Sahodharan Ayyappan Road will now be able proceed to Thevara bypassing both these busy stretches.
The new extended Marine Drive walkway built at a cost of Rs 7.5-crore and conceived as part of the project to beautify it by the GCDA, will be inaugurated on April 14.
The 700-metre long and 12 meters wide walkway comes complete with a Kettuvallam (houseboat) bridge, restaurant and refreshment centre. Another flagship project, the underground exhibitioncumconvention centre near Jawaharlal Nehru stadium, is also making progress with two agencies submitting feasible technical and financial bids for it.
A decision will be taken on selecting one of the agencies at a meeting on Saturday, and tenders for construction will then be invited, according to GCDA chairman, N. Venugopal. If all goes according to plan, construction will begin by October this year and the Rs 30 crore project could be completed in a year- and- a -half.
