Coimbatore: Members of the All India Youth Federation (AIYF) petitioned the city police commissioner on Tuesday seeking police protection for lovers on Valentine’s Day from religious and political groups.
According to James of AIYF, the group pointed out in its petition that every year on February 14(Valentine’s Day) religious parties and anti-love protesters gather in city parks and other venues where lovers meet to celebrate the day.
“The protesters try to catch them and force them to marry in public places. They have to be stopped this year,” James said.
“We have asked the city police to strengthen police security in parks, temples and cinema theatres where a huge number of protesters gather and create trouble to lovers. Interfering in the personal lives of others is not right and it has to be stopped,” James pointed out.
City police commissioner A. K. Viswanathan assured petitioners that the city police had strengthened security in VOC Park, Gandhi Park, temple, malls and cinema theatres.
Police said they have also instructed political parties and religious forums not to stage any unwanted protests on Valentine’s Day.
