Approximately 90 films were made in Kannada this year (as of November). Out of them, very few managed to make money at the box office. A lot of them struggled to even break even while several tanked without a trace.
We bring you a list of ten movies (in no particular order) which had bankable stars but still failed to make an impact at the box office...
2/11
Gokula Krishna:
How Prajwal Devraj, after delivering multiple flops, manages to sign film after film is a mystery. Gokula Krishna, starring Prajwal and Ananya in the lead, deals with the beaten subject of widow remarriage. Mundane subject, even lamer direction and mediocre acting had the audience giving it a thumbs down in the first week. The film tanked without a trace.

Shakti:
Action queen Malashree has been trying time and again to make a comeback, but in vain. Shakti was yet another failed attempt. The film was produced by her husband Ramu and directed by Anil Kumar. Even with an ensemble supporting cast of Ashish Vidyarthi, Sadhu Kokila, Sayaji Shinde, and Vinaya Prasad, Malashree failed to get the audiences to see her.

Dev S/o Mudde Gowda:
Indrajit Lankesh is known more for the glitz and glamour in his films. Let it be known that none other than the gorgeous Deepika Padukone made her entry into films with Indrajit’s Aishwarya, starring alongside Upendra. Indrajit left no stone unturned in terms of publicity for Dev, starring Diganth and Charmee in the lead. He roped in Natalia Kaur, Indian-Brazil model and Kingfisher calendar girl for the film. But none of it could save the film from being a disaster at the box office.
5/11
Kalaya Tasmai Namaha:
A weak script, slow narrative and a beaten-to-death storyline spelled doom for Kalaya Tasmai Namaha. The Yogi starrer had some interesting posters which held promise. But the movie turned out to be slow and taxing with nothing new on offer. Director Chandrashekhar Srivastava called a press meet, took the entire blame for the film’s failing upon himself and let Yogi off the hook.
6/11
Charulatha:
Labeled as Priyamani’s comeback vehicle, Charulatha, failed to live up to the audience’s expectations. Though she won some rave reviews for her double role as conjoined twins, the movie which was simultaneously made in Kannada and Telugu, could not hit bulls-eye at the box office. A weak script that failed to scare or entertain, added to the film’s woes.
7/11
Mr. 420:
Ganesh and Rangayana Raghu, who are counted among the finer actors of Kannada cinema, turned in bad and over the top performances in Mr.420 which was touted to be a comedy caper. Visible lack of chemistry between the lead pair Ganesh and Pranitha; loud and exaggerated acting by Rangayana Raghu; boring screenplay and direction by Pradeep Raj, and mediocre music by V Harikrishna – all of these and more contributed to the movie being a major disappointment.
8/11
Mr. Shikari:
Shikari was Abhay Simha’s second directorial after Gubbachigalu, an award winning children’s film. It was nothing short of a coup that he roped in Mammootty to play the lead. But the film ran into financial trouble and was stalled for quite some time. Producer K Manju finally released the film, but it failed miserably because of the confusing narrative style, though Abhay’s attempt at making different kind of cinema was recognized.
9/11
Mr. Narasimha:
Ravichandran is known for the elaborate sets and props that he uses in his songs and has his own set of loyal fans. But even that didn’t lure his fans to this movie, which was a disaster from the name go. The sizzling Nikesha Patel in wet sarees was wasted in this pointless film.
10/11
Mr. Munjane:
Ganesh gave Mungaru Male and Gaalipata, some of the biggest hits of Kannada cinema and….. and that’s it. After that, he has not been able to come even close to giving that big a hit. His films have been flopping left, right and center. So much so, that S Narayan, the director of Munjane, hung up his boots and swore never to make films again when the movie turned out to be a box office dud… that Narayan did not stick to his promise is another story…
11/11
Sagar:
Prajwal Devraj couldn’t save Sagar though he had three hot girls Radhika Pandit, Haripriya and Sanjjanaa for support. Prajwal was optimistic of the film directed by M D Shridhar, but it failed to impress because of the boring and predictable story. It joined the long line of flops delivered by Prajwal Devaraj.
