SRPF jawans guarding Taj Mahal hotel evicted from Gateway of India

Mumbai: The State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) jawans staying at the Gateway of India following their deployment to protect the Taj hotel, which bore the brunt of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack, have been evicted from the heritage monument, officials said.

Colaba police removed the belongings of the jawans last night, they said.

The Maharashtra home minister, Mr R.R. Patil, later visited the spot and directed that tents be provided for the jawans, who were using the monument premises as living quarters in absence of proper accommodation for two months.

Meanwhile, commenting on the issue, the Chief Minister, Mr Ashok Chavan, said there was scarcity of accommodation for policemen, but the state government was taking measures to rectify the situation.
